Current Reading List

Our “school year” runs from July-June, so this list is currently for July 2019-June 2020. This is just a way for me to track what we’ve read over the school year. As you can imagine, keeping up with four kids equals a lot of books!

I had surgery over the Summer, so we neglected the public library’s Summer Reading Program this year. That also means we fell behind with our nightly family reading. September is when “school” stuff really starts back up, and our goal besides our nightly family reading (usually a chapter, but in Tolkien’s case, more like half of a chapter each night), is for the girls to carve out 30 minutes somewhere in their day to read.

Our current and recommended books are currently living in a basket on the piano.

Our Nightly Family Reading Books

  • Lord of the Rings: The Return Of The King - J.R.R. Tolkien
  • Our past family reading included the first two books from the LOTR trilogy.
  • We've also completed the Harry Potter series.

Alexis

  • The Storm Runner - J.C. Cervantes

Lillian

  • Path to the Stars - My Journey from Girl Scout to Rocket Scientist - Sylvia Acevedo

Avery

  • Ivy and Bean

Henna

  • Dora the Explorer

I admit, Luke and I love to collect books, but neither one of us are big readers. We both did the bare minimum reading requirements in school. I think Luke was bored, and I always lacked a bit of focus, which meant my reading comprehension wasn’t the best. I try to make some time to read now, and sometimes I’m successful, but I still lack the focus, and my eyes start to dry out and burn from my Sjogren’s Syndrome.

I hope the girls enjoy reading more than either of us did as kids, but because of how reading was presented to me in school, I’m hoping to stay away from formal book reports and have more casual discussions about the books they are reading, along with letting them have free choice over the majority of the books they read. I do have a small mental reading list of books I remember reading for school, so we will hit some of those books since they seem to be considered a school standard.

Do you have a book suggestion for the girls? Click the button and let us know! Maybe I’ll end up with a recommended reading list page to share!
